Extended trading hours have been approved for most hotels and registered clubs outisde of the lockout area during the broadcast of three major sporting events that are scheduled outside of regular trading hours during the 2016 Olympic Games. The following events are considered to have regional, state or national significance:
Trading hours 4am-10am
Women's Basketball Final
Men's Football Final
Trading hours 4am-5am
Men's Basketball Final
Venues are not permitted to trade between their standard closing time and 4am.
Take-away liquor sales are not permitted.
Extended trading period will not apply to venues subject to the lock-out provisions of the Act, or to venues that do not provide a broadcast of the event for patrons.
The extended trading will not override restrictions on trading imposed by local councils under planning laws, or conditions relating to trading restrictions on individual hotels and registered clubs.
The approval is contained in the Liquor Amendment (Special Events Extended Trading) Regulation (No 2) 2016, which has been made pursuant to sections 13 and 159 of the Liquor Act 2007.
