Australasian Racing Ministers met in Sydney today to discuss issues affecting the industry.
Ministers received briefings from the three national controlling bodies; the Australian Racing Board, Harness Racing Australia and Greyhounds Australasia, as well as Commonwealth representatives from the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry on proposed new post-entry quarantine arrangements.
Ministers also received a briefing from the Australian Turf Club on the new Royal Randwick Racecourse redevelopment and shared information on significant issues of interest.
Ministers agreed to write to the Federal Government and Opposition reiterating previous requests for legislation to safeguard Australian racing participants through blocking access to websites of unauthorised offshore wagering operators. This action is sought to protect consumers from unscrupulous and unregulated practices and to ensure the viability of the Australian racing industry.
