New guidelines for gambling advertising published

Betting service providers, publishers and third-party affiliates have been provided with new guidelines for gambling advertising, featuring tighter restrictions on advertising inducements to gamble.

The NSW Government announced strengthened laws around advertising inducements in March 2018, including:

  • increased penalties for betting service providers that offer inducements to gamble and publish prohibited gambling advertising from $5,500 to $55,000 for corporations
  • increased power to hold directors of betting service providers accountable for misconduct in their organisations, including potential criminal convictions..

All relevant staff of wagering businesses, publishers and third-party affiliates are encouraged to familiarise themselves with the guidelines and ensure they understand how the new restrictions will operate.

The restrictions come into effect on Monday 2 July.
