Our role

Liquor & Gaming NSW administers the regulatory framework for the liquor, gaming, wagering, casino and registered clubs sectors in NSW. This includes undertaking compliance and enforcement activities, providing policy advice to government, licensing certain activities and delivering industry support and education activities.

In addition, we provide secretariat support to the Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority, the statutory decision-maker responsible for a range of casino, liquor, registered club and gaming machine regulatory functions.

We work hard to ensure:

  • that people enjoy vibrant and dynamic, as well as safe and responsible, liquor and gaming environments
  • that our regulatory efforts are evidenced-informed, coordinated, and targeted to where the risks are greatest

Background

Formed on 1 February 2016 we took on most of the responsibilities performed by two former agencies, the Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing and the Independent, Liquor & Gaming Authority (ILGA).

The Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority Board was retained as an independent statutory decision maker to deal with higher risk and more contentious licensing decisions, as well as maintain its merits review and disciplinary functions.

On 1 April 2022 we became part of Hospitality and Racing within the NSW Department of Enterprise, Investment and Trade.
