Our role

L&GNSW sits within the NSW Department of Industry and is responsible for the regulation of liquor, gambling, and registered clubs in NSW.

We take an innovative and agile approach to regulation, to foster vibrant, responsible and sustainable liquor and gaming industry development, balanced with minimising risk of alcohol-related and gambling harm in line with community expectations.

We provide:

  • licensing, compliance and enforcement functions
  • policy advice, program evaluation, and executive support to the NSW Government
  • administrative review and secretariat support to the Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority Board.

We work hard to:

  • ensure our regulatory efforts are evidence informed, coordinated, and targeted to where the risks are greatest
  • ensure decision making and processes are transparent and accountable
  • strengthen engagement and partnerships with our industry stakeholders and the broader community.

Background

Formed on 1 February 2016 we took on most of the responsibilities performed by two former agencies, the Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing and the Independent, Liquor & Gaming Authority (ILGA).

The Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority Board was retained as an independent statutory decision maker to deal with higher risk and more contentious licensing decisions, as well as maintain its merits review and disciplinary functions.
