Applications open for free small bar licence conversion and staff drinks introduced

Venues across NSW can take advantage of a measure that has been introduced to enable a more diverse night-time environment:

Free small bar licence conversion

An extension has been given to licensees who hold either an on-premises or hotel (general bar licence) that was in force before 1 September 2018. These licensees can apply free of charge to convert their licence to a small bar licence until 29 February 2020.

Small bar licences:

  • offer the advantage of diverse business models
  • have lower ongoing fees, and exemptions from additional risk loadings for late trading
  • are exempt from the liquor licence freeze in the Sydney CBD and Kings Cross precincts.

The opportunity to convert is available at no cost until 29 February 2020. Applications for conversions are only available for hotel (general bar) and on-premises licences, other licences are not eligible.

Conversions cannot be reversed and existing licences will be cancelled when a small bar conversion is approved. On-premises licence holders wishing to convert to a small bar licence must obtain development consent that permits the premises to be operated as a small bar.
