Liquor & Gaming NSW inspectors will be active over the Australia Day long weekend to check venues are complying with responsible service of alcohol requirements so everyone can celebrate safely.
Liquor & Gaming NSW director of compliance operations, Sean Goodchild, said inspectors will be targeting areas across the state where large numbers of people congregate for Australia Day celebrations.
“We want to ensure everyone can celebrate safely in well managed licensed venues with the lowest possible risks of alcohol-related harm,” he said.
“This year Australia Day falls on a Friday which may result in larger crowds taking advantage of the long weekend including events at licensed venues on Australia Day eve.
“The weekend also is at the end of the school holidays and there may be increased risk of minors trying to buy alcohol or enter licensed premises.”
Mr Goodchild said inspectors have also been monitoring potential irresponsible liquor promotions and have stopped an “all you can drink” Australia Day eve promotion at one venue.
“In the lead up to Australia Day, we are meeting with licensees and managers to advise on best practice for complying with liquor laws over the long weekend,” he said.
