Media statement: Court decision on Ladbrokes appeal against conviction for unlawful advertising

On 20 February 2019, the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal upheld an appeal by Ladbrokes Digital Australia Pty Ltd (Ladbrokes) against a conviction for unlawful sports betting advertising.

On 5 April 2017, following a Liquor & Gaming NSW investigation, Ladbrokes was convicted in the Local Court of NSW of 10 counts of publishing gambling related advertisements contrary to the NSW Betting and Racing Regulation 2016.

Ladbrokes appealed to the District Court of NSW. On 5 December 2017, this appeal was dismissed.

Ladbrokes then appealed to the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal.

Liquor & Gaming NSW is carefully reviewing the decision and remains committed to ensuring gambling advertising practices that pose risks of gambling harm are fairly regulated and comply with NSW laws
