Music festival licensing scheme disallowed by NSW Legislative Council

On 26 September 2019 the NSW Legislative Council voted to remove the requirement that certain music festivals must hold a Music Festival Licence to operate their event in NSW.

As a result of the Council’s vote, all licences issued under the scheme are no longer valid.

Festival organisers who wish to sell liquor at their event will need to operate under a:

Current Music Festival Licence applications can be converted to a limited licence – special event.

It is recommended festival operators consult with NSW Police, NSW Health, NSW Ambulance and NSW Fire and Rescue or the Rural Fire Service and refer to the NSW Health Guidelines for music festival event organisers: music festival harm reduction - August 2019 in preparing for their event.

Liquor & Gaming NSW will work closely with operators for upcoming music festivals to help them understand the liquor licence requirements for their events.
