New Liquor Promotion Guidelines released

Liquor & Gaming NSW has released the Liquor Promotion Guidelines 2019 (PDF 264.1 KB) following a review of the 2013 Guidelines last year.

Changes have been made to ensure the Guidelines remain effective and recognise new and emerging industry practices.

Licensees should consider the Guidelines when running liquor promotions, to help ensure they are meeting their obligations under the Liquor Act 2007 and promote and sell alcohol responsibly.

What has changed?

The main changes to be aware of include:

  • New examples of ‘unacceptable practices’ that must not be undertaken are included under Principles 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7.
  • Additional protections for minors, conveying that it is likely to be unacceptable in all cases to place promotional materials near a school or other places used mainly by minors.
  • Additional information on running promotions online, including social media and promotions run by third parties.
  • Information and examples of past promotions investigated by Liquor & Gaming NSW are included to help licensees understand how the Guidelines apply.
  • A more detailed section on harm minimisation for liquor promotions to give licensees practical steps to minimise harm.
  • Content changes aimed at making it easier for licensees to understand and apply the Guidelines.

To ensure your future liquor promotions are run responsibly, please download and read the Guidelines  (PDF 264.1 KB) carefully.
