SA2 bands have been updated

Statistical Areas Level 2 (SA2) bands used to assess applications for gaming machine increases have been updated.

Hotels and clubs applying to increase their number of gaming machines are encouraged to check their LIA band on our updated map.

Your SA2 band will affect whether you need to submit a Local Impact Assessment (LIA).

What is an SA2 and why is it important?

  • SA2s are geographical areas representing a community that interacts socially and economically. They are set by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
  • The Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority (ILGA) uses SA2s to determine what is considered a ‘local community’ for an LIA, as required under the Gaming Machines Act 2001.
  • As part of this process, ILGA classifies SA2s as Band 1 (lower risk), Band 2 or Band 3 (higher risk) depending on how many gaming machines are in the area, how much is spent on gaming machines and other socio-economic factors.
  • When a hotel or club is applying to increase their gaming machines, the band they are located in affects whether they need to submit an LIA or what type of LIA they need to submit to ILGA. This helps ILGA make an informed decision on the application.

The latest ABS census data and new gaming machine data was used by ILGA to update the SA2 bands, which came into effect on 21 October.

You can find your new LIA band by following the instructions above.

More information about submitting an LIA is on our website.
