You need to complete the Responsible Service of Alcohol Training.

Note: if you an interstate RSA holder you may be eligible for Automatic Mutual Recognition of your interstate RSA certification, or can complete the RSA Bridging Course online in lieu of the full RSA course.

A licensee or a person managing a premises

Licensee training is required for most licensees, club secretaries, and approved managers.

Advanced Licensee training is an additional course and endorsement for operators who trade in a higher risk environment, such as:

    • those authorised to trade after midnight on more than 12 occasions in any 12-month period
    • specific business types, such as night clubs, karaoke bars
    • operators subject to a regulatory scheme
    • as directed by L&GNSW or ILGA

Note: Some operators may be required to undertake further training than indicated below. Operators will be identified at the discretion of L&GNSW or the Independent Liquor & Gaming Authority (ILGA).

If you are an interstate worker with an appropriate RSA qualification and plan to become a licensee, approved manager or club secretary in NSW, you do not need to complete the NSW RSA Bridging course. You can obtain your NSW RSA and Licensee endorsements on your competency card by completing Licensee training.

A person who uses an ID scanner in a licenced venue

ID scanners are machines that electronically read and store identification cards, such as a driver licence or proof of age card. Licensees can voluntarily install ID scanners as a security measure for their venue.

If you work in a venue and operate an ID scanner installed in your venue, you must comply with the Privacy Act 1988 to protect the personal information recorded by a patron ID scanner.

If you are a licensee, this means you must ensure staff understand:

  • privacy laws
  • legal requirements when scanning a patron’s ID
  • the importance of protecting personal information.

For more information about privacy refer to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner.

Note: L&GNSW no longer facilitates privacy training. However existing Privacy endorsements on NSW competency cards obtained on previously completing the L&GNSW Privacy training will continue to be recognised.
