Extended trading hours

You can apply to permanently extend your trading hours or there are two options to occasionally extend your trading hours:

  1. Occasional extended trading condition – all areas
  2. Multi-occasional extended trading authorisation – regional and rural areas

Before you apply to extend your trading hours, you should check that your current development consent for the venue allows you to trade until the hours you are applying for.

Permanent extended trading hours

By law, standard trading hours, except for take-away liquor, are:

  • 5am - midnight Monday to Sunday
  • 10am - midnight Monday to Sunday for small bars.

Licensees who permanently trade after midnight are required to pay an annual trading hours risk loading:

Permanent authorised trading hoursTrading hours risk loading payable
Premises authorised to trade up to 1:30am on a regular basis$3,203
Premises authorised to trade after 1:30am on a regular basis$6,400

Note: Venues whose licensees and managers have not incurred any demerit points in the last three years will be given a 5% discount on annual liquor licence fees on base fee and trading hours risk loading.

You are able to apply to trade outside the standard trading period by submitting an extended trading authorisation application using the link applicable to your licence type found in the table below.

Occasional extended trading condition

If you are a licensee permitted to trade after midnight, you can reduce your annual liquor licence fee by applying for an occasional extended trading condition (OETC) for your licence.

This condition means you can only trade past midnight or 1.30am on up to 12 occasions over any 12-month period.

Licensees with an OETC:

  • who occasionally trade after midnight do not pay trading hours risk loading.
  • that allows regular trading up until 1:30am, and occasional trading after 1.30am, are required to pay a $3,203 trading hours risk loading.

Multi-occasional extended trading authorisation

The multi-occasional extended trading authorisation (MOETA) allows you to trade to 3am 12 times over a 12-month period.

This option is available for regional venues only that:

  • are authorised to trade past midnight, but rarely do
  • would like to reduce their trading hours fee
  • have standard trading hours
  • would like to occasionally trade past midnight.

The MOETA attracts an annual loading of $1,281.

Note: Venues whose licensees and managers have not incurred any demerit points in the last three years will be given a 5% discount on annual liquor licence fees on base fee and trading hours risk loading.
